This month, November 2002, was the beginning of water restrictions in Victoria, a symptom of the current drought and poor water resources. During my childhood in Frankston, Victoria at Overport Primary School, I can remember the heat we had and the restrictions imposed on us, from "no watering the garden" to "short showers only, no baths", in an effort by the authorities to conserve a dwindling supply of water in the metropolitan reservous. Frankston used Devils's Bend, and the water was getting notably murky. Then they built the Thompson River Project, the biggest dam in Victorian history, and for a couple of decades we could relax with such restrictions a thing of the past. Now they have returned, in the largest drought on record hitting the whole nation. What can be done to prevent this in the future?
